This is a 6 week class.

Discover the transformation of clay, surface and fire in Alchemy Lab, a 6-week hands-on ceramics workshop exploring mocha diffusion, reactive glazing, wild and coastal materials, atmospheric firing concepts and experimental surface development. Through guided demonstrations, glaze testing, kiln discussions and creative experimentation, students will develop unique surfaces inspired by chemistry, nature, and the unpredictable beauty of the firing process. Perfect for adventurous ceramic artists interested in expanding their understanding of materials, glaze interaction and atmospheric effects.

Class will use multiple kilns for different cone firings.

Class will share shelf space because this is a testing type class. Clay will be included for test tiles. Additional clay can be purchased for $45 per bag.

Open Studio use for students in this class starts first day of class and ends on last class unless student is signed up for next session.

The Falmouth Art Center is very proud to have a scholarship fund supported by donations from members and friends. It is available for both children and adults who have a great desire to create art. Scholarship Information and Forms

Refund policy:

Refunds will not be given within one week of the start of a class. Classes are not pro-rated, and there are no makeups for missed classes. A $25 processing fee is withheld from all refunds.

The Art Center reserves the right to cancel any class or workshop due to insufficient enrollment, in which case tuition will be fully refunded.

If Falmouth Public Schools are closed due to weather conditions, we will be closed and the missed classes will be rescheduled.

Materials

Fee includes 25 pounds of clay, glaze and firing fee. A tool kit may be purchased for $25. Open studio time, which is scheduled several times throughout the week, is available at no extra charge.

Bring an apron or an old towel to protect your clothes. We sell sturdy aprons in red, black and tan at Falmouth Art Center for $28 if you need to purchase one.

Instructor Bio

Patrice Mogan got her Bachelors in Fine Arts at Green Mountain College in Vermont. During a summer abroad, she lived in Aberystwyth, Wales, where she did her college internship at the Ceredigion Museum. Her internship included restoration of cultural artifacts, cataloging, and assisting with setting up exhibits at multiple museums in Wales and England. A few years after college, Patrice briefly lived in Eureka, CA. While there she worked for HCAR as the Lead Art teacher in their fine arts program for people with developmental disabilities. Patrice found herself back on Cape Cod and taking ceramic classes at the Harry Holl Studio at the Cape Cod Museum of Art. After a year of classes and helping in the studio, her teacher recommended her for an apprenticeship at Scargo Pottery–the Studio and Gallery that was established in 1952 by renowned potter Harry Holl. After eight years of apprenticeship, she is now the studio manager. As manager, her role includes mixing glazes, ordering supplies, unloading kilns, reclaiming and recycling clay, and above all else helping and educating the many customers who visit daily. Patrice enjoys making and selling functional pottery, wall tiles, and whimsical sculptures. Born and raised on Cape Cod, she is inspired by her environment and the beauty that surrounds her.

Melissa Hofer is a Falmouth resident who has been working with clay at the Falmouth Art Center since 2016. She primarily makes functional work in a variety of clay types and firing techniques, especially enjoying the wood firing process. She also works full time at Cape Cod Healthcare in the IT Department.
