Kimekomi with Sue Clark
Kimekomi is a traditional Japanese craft of creating dolls or ornaments by tucking fabric into grooves carved into a wooden or foam base. The name “kimekomi” literally means “tucked-in wood”. The technique involves carving grooves into the base, cutting fabric pieces to fit the patterns, and then using a tool to push the fabric into the grooves to create the clothing or design.
Sue Clark has been exploring the Japanese art form Kimekomi. She has graciously agreed to lead a program making an ornament using this technique. Instead of the original base of wood, we will use foam balls.
There will be an assortment of fabrics on hand, but please consider sharing more.
For this design, each ball requires 8 pieces of fabric 2 1/2” x 6”. Bring any embellishments you choose. Balls will be provided for $1.00 if you request one or bring your own.
Besides fabric scraps please bring: (as referenced in photo)
- fabric scissors
- detail scissors
- tool for pressing in designs such as seam ripper, awl, small screw driver, or pointed shaping tools
- exacto knife
- pencil
- pearl tipped pins
- glue stick
Please let Christine know if you plan to attend the meeting and whether you need a foam ball.
