AWARDS
Best of show:
Still Life with Cat by Athena Carey
This wonderful image of a cat with its amazing collection of natural and man-made items is a stunner. The cat is placed perfectly within the image and the array of items scattered around the composition shows that a great deal of thought and care was used in creating “kitties” environment. She’s dressed up for this exhibition, and her somewhat haughty expression suggests she’s very pleased with herself. Brilliant work overall, with the lace collar being a stroke of genius.
Best Animal:
Family in the tundra by Carolyn Pelkey
This is an outstanding, almost intimate family portrait. One cub has scented something in the wind while the other is watching the photographer while mom is remaining somewhat aloof. The composition is superb, with a great foreground, wonderful lighting and fantastic detail overall.
Best black & white:
Lisa Spraragen in b&w, by Howard Hill
This is a wonderful candid image of a very talented musician at work. She stands out beautifully from the somewhat busy background. Her intense expression as she works her fingers on the strings is wonderful. There’s great soft lighting, plenty of detail and the tonal range is perfect. Brilliant work!
Best seascape:
Texture on the Beach by Kelly Burdge
This is a wonderful low-level view of water formed ripples where their neat, almost precise arrangement leads you into the image. It was taken at a time when the sun was below the horizon but the sky was still bright enough to provide nice reflections. The composition is very strong, with the largest elements placed in the lower left corner and the rest sweeping away into the distance…. A wonderful image having great impact.
Best people / Person:
In his World by Randall Otto
This is a wonderful image having a distinctly lonely, almost melancholy atmosphere. The boy seems to be just passing time fiddling with his fingers, seeming to have nothing else to do, living through another boring, humdrum day. Even his canine companion has a somewhat lost, forlorn appearance. The puddles in the street, the drab color and rough condition of the buildings contribute to the overall atmosphere of loneliness.
Honorable Mentions:
Lower Manhattan by Judd Brotman
This is a brilliant composition having wonderful contrast between the graceful curved elements and the hard-edged, ”blocky” architecture. The lighting is wonderful as is the relatively limited range of color. You almost get the impression that the curved structure was made of soft clay and sagged into its present bent over posture.
Roadside Americana by Alicia Buccino
This is a brilliant composition, great colorful curved feathers that seem to be almost bursting out of the image like feathery fireworks. The soft focus small head in the upper left emphasizes this impression. This is a wonderful image taken from a viewpoint that makes excellent use of the subject’s construction. Well done!
Nosey by Katalena Hume
This is a wonderful “in your face” high impact portrait of a pig that should have washed up a bit before its modeling session. This image has the greatest degree of impact of all hung in this exhibit. The nose seems to follow you around the room like the eyes in some portraits in suspense films. The slightly open mouth works well with the muddy snout. Out of focus eyes and ears accentuate the prominence of the muddy nose. Very well done!
Local Delight by Linda Karmen
This is a superb image of a young berry picker showing off his harvest. His expression is wonderful and gives a definite sense that he’s very proud of his work. His blue clothing was a great choice of wardrobe for his berry picking day. His blue eyes almost mirror the berries in his pail, where brown eyes wouldn’t work nearly as well. Great stuff!
Braveheart in January by Susan Moffat
This is a classy image showing an activity that I personally have never participated in, and probably never will. The expression on the face of the person “running for his life,” seeking a warmer environment… is priceless. It absolutely makes the image. Look closely and notice the gentleman who looks like he’ll shortly be losing his bathing suit. This is a brilliant image of a winter “beach plunge.” The runner needs to get a copy of this.
Onaqui Wild Horses, Utah by Desiree Tedford
This is a marvelous environmental image of a band of wild horses that has great impact created by their placement in the photograph. The trio almost gives the impression that they’re gossiping, and the “outsider” is the subject of their conversation. The lighting, sweeping landscape, color and the arrangement of horses all work together to make this a print that any equine enthusiast would want displayed on their wall.
My overall impressions of the exhibit:
Brilliant work! It’s a real treat to be able to closely examine a gallery full of images displayed in a way where you can appreciate the body of work as a whole, and be able to study each piece as closely and for as long as you wish The variety of mounting/display methods utilized by the makers is a real eye-opener. Everyone who attends this exhibit should leave very satisfied with what they’ve seen and be itching to get out and try producing similar work. The variety of subject matter was outstanding.
