Step Outside Workshop: From en Plein Air to the Studio with Betsy Payne Cook: July 30

Materials

Supply list:

Optional but useful items to have are a camp chair for the demo or when you take a break, and an artist’s umbrella to keep you and your painting out of the sun!

Sketchbook and drawing tools to create sketches with at least 3 values. I use grey toned paper and black & white china markers, other options: markers, charcoal, pencils.

Your painting/pastel supplies. Selection of colors with a range of values ( dark to light) and temperatures (cool to warm) and neutrals.  Lessen the load, do not bring everything from your studio.  You may want to bring a limited palette with a specific range of colors to represent the location.

An easel that is stable and easy to transport, with easel legs that can easily adjust to the terrain. Please get in touch if you need an easel.

Weighted bag (backpack, art bag) to use for stabilizing your easel. If the conditions are windy you can hang the bag from the easel with a bungee cord. This bag will hold the items you need and you can keep it filled and ready to go even after the workshop!

• Tape
• Drawing supplies: sketchbook, markers, charcoal, pencils, erasers
• A plastic trash bag lining the bottom of your art bag, especially if the ground is damp
• Apron or painting shirt
• Partial roll of paper towels, hand sanitizer
• Bungee cords, utility clips and black clips can be used for a million different reasons!
• Necessities for you : sunscreen, bug repellant, hat with brim, water bottle, snack. Sunglasses ( but a word to the wise, don’t paint wearing sunglasses, colors and values will be inaccurate!)

To transport your studies/sketches/paintings.

Remember we are working small in the morning. 5 x 7, 6 x 6 ,6 x 8, 8 x 8, 8x 10

For the small studies/sketches painting you can tape them in your sketch book, then clip it so the pages don’t move.

For wet paint: A flat box to store your studies, a pizza box can hold a few small paintings!  Carriers are on the market for wet mediums.

For pastel or dry mediums: Clip together two pieces of foam core to transport paper and protect your pre-cut selection of papers and your finished studies at the end! Sheets of glassine or tracing paper protects while transporting but can become airborne really easily.

 

Viewfinder such as the Picture Perfect viewfinder or the Viewcatcher. I will have some Viewcatchers  for sale at the workshop $6.25.

 

For morning small studies : You can do small studies in a multi-media heavy weight paper sketchbook ( paper might need to be prepped , just get in touch with me ahead of the workshop) or bring a selection of papers or panels for your medium in various sizes but no larger than 8 x 10.

For studio painting: You can finalize your plein air studies or you can create a new painting any size using the studies as reference.
