Saturday and Sunday, September 5 and 6
9am to 4pm

Don’t forget to pack a lunch! If you forgot your lunch or need to pick one up early in the morning, Cape Cod Bagel is open and located about one mile from FAC and makes sandwiches early in the morning.

This is a color based workshop designed for artists to grasp a better understanding of Light and color. The artist will paint from life. John will show various ways to mix and apply color that will make your painting light filled and express the light key. We will work on getting good structural design through values and color.

Each class will have a different lesson. Using various tools (Brushes as well as a painting knife) the artists will work on getting good color notes to bring out expressive designs. We will also go over the use of creating Notan for our designs.

We will work in and around Falmouth creating paintings and studies bring them back to the studio for a critique or to finish. If the weather should be inclement we will work on a still life, or exercises that improve our paintings. Exercises such as Light and Shade and Notan for better painting designs.

Falmouth Art Center Refund Policy:

Refunds will not be given within one month of the start of a workshop. Workshops are not pro-rated. A $25 processing fee is withheld from all refunds.

The Art Center reserves the right to cancel any workshop due to insufficient enrollment, in which case tuition will be fully refunded.

Palette Knives: I tend to like using a painting knife to paint with You may use any type. A good one is Blick Comfort Grip Palette Knife by RGM – Small Spade, Style 44 03103-1044

Gessoed Masonite Hardboard I recommend 9×12, 8×10 You may work larger if you wish.

16×20 and 12×16 Pre Gessoed boards are available at http://www.jerrysartarama.com

Ampersand Gesso board /18. various sizes are okay.

I use Canson Canvaspaper 9×12

I also use Canson Plein Air ArtBoards 9×12.They are available though Blick, and Jerry’s Artarama

Fredrix Canvas Pad 8×10. . You can travel light with them and tape them to a board).

Out Door Easel

Bounty Paper towels, Viva are great!

Visor or cap with a brim

Blue Pastel or Prismcolor pencil or Soft Vine Charcoal

Oil Paint (I use Winsor Newton. Other brands are acceptable as long as they are artist grade).

You can use a limited palette: a warm and cool of Yellow, Blue, Red, one orange, purple and Green

Instructor Bio

John Clayton, searching for of his own artistic voice, left the grey walls of The Art Student’s League of New York. Clayton’s journey lead him to the Cape School in Provincetown where he embraced the “Art of Seeing Color” as taught by the late Henry Hensche, and Charles W. Hawthorne.

Clayton would paint outdoors as often as he could. Over many years Clayton matured into a devoted plein air painter. He now makes his living painting and teaching throughout Cape Cod in the Summers and the streets of Key West in the Winter. “Color is the vehicle I use to express my own sense of nature. I am inspired by nature and light; its ever changing conditions are challenging to me.

His work is about the light key, and expressing it through paint. While attending the The National Academy in New York, John was the recipient of the Arthur and Melville Philips Scholarship and the Mrs Roberts Forbes Scholarship. He also received an honorable mention in the Academy’s annual student show. Clayton was one of eight in the Provincetown Art Association’s “Emerging Artists Exhibition”, in 1999.

In 2006 he received a Mass Cultural Council grant. Among the many teachers with whom John Clayton has studied, include Harvey Dinnerstein, Marybeth McKenzie, and Cedric Egeli.
