Class meets every other week for 6 sessions. Class dates: June 17, July 1, July 15, July 29, August 12, August 26

This is an online class using the Zoom platform. You will be emailed the Zoom link before the class starts.

Discover collage as an accessible, expressive art form built from cutting, layering, and combining found imagery and materials. In this beginner-friendly, interactive online course, you’ll explore the history and contemporary practice of collage while learning core techniques—composition, color, texture, and visual storytelling—

In this course, you will:

Learn about the easily acquired tools, various adhesives, and safety tips for clean, confident collage-making
Practice techniques like cutting, tearing, layering, and image transfer basics to build depth and texture
Use composition strategies such as focal point, balance, contrast, and rhythm to strengthen your designs
Develop a personal image library from catalogs, magazines, painted and found papers
Create at least 6 finished pieces of varying complexity

Complete beginners and artists in other mediums who want a structured introduction to collage. No prior drawing or painting experience required.

Refund policy:

Refunds will not be given within one week of the start of a class. Classes are not pro-rated, and there are no makeups for missed classes. A $25 processing fee is withheld from all refunds.

The Art Center reserves the right to cancel any class or workshop due to insufficient enrollment, in which case tuition will be fully refunded.

Materials

The materials you’ll need to begin: sharp scissors or a craft knife, glue stick, water based glue or matte medium, a few magazines, assorted papers (scrap, colored, textured), and a sketchbook or heavy paper. A phone camera is helpful for sharing progress.

Collage Materials List

A heavy-duty paper that will be an excellent base for your collages. I like this size, but you choose your favorite:

Canson Artist Series Montval Watercolor Paper, Wirebound Pad, 10×15 inches, 12 Sheets (140lb/300g)

A Gelli plate is great for creating your own patterned papers. Use with regular acrylic paints.

Gelli Arts Gel Printing Plate – 8″ X 10″ Gel Plate

These cutting tools are good additions to scissors, and regular Exacto knives.

Fiskars Rotary Paper Edger, 45mm Premium Steel Blade and/or VViViD 360 Degree Comfort Grip Swivel Blade Craft Cutting Knife

Collage is a glue ‘heavy’ medium, and one easy-to-use glue stick is:

Uhu Colored Glue Stick, blue, rubs on blue & dries clear.

We will experiment with loads of different collage papers but you can make your own translucent tissue, using various coloring methods, with this:

To prepare for this class you can begin gathering papers. You’ll want to collect highly visual magazines, catalogs, junk mail, business envelopes (they are lines with small scale patterns,) old book pages, last year’s calendar, wrapping paper, greeting cards, you name it! If it has some visual appeal and isn’t TOO heavy, save it. I organize my papers roughly into folders by predominant color.

Instructor Bio

Ashley Wolff has been a visual artist since she declared herself one at the age of 5.

She grew up in Middlebury, Vermont and holds a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design.

Ashley is the author and/or illustrator of over 70 children’s picture books including Baby Bear Sees Blue, Stella and Roy Go Camping, Only the Cat Saw, Compost Stew, Baby Beluga, and the beloved Miss Bindergarten Series.

Every summer Ashley teaches writing and illustration in the Children’s Picture Book Writing & Illustration MFA and certificate programs at Hollins University.

For 30 years one of Ashley’s favorite pastimes has been traveling to schools all over the US, speaking to children about writing, drawing and using their imagination to help them find their paths to the future.

She lives and works on Lake Dunmore in Leicester, VT.
