MATERIALS LIST FOR GETTING STARTED IN WATERCOLOR

PAPER-

-PENTALIC WATERCOLOR FIELD BOOK, wirebound  11 x 14”  24 sheets, 140 LB paper. This is available on the Dick Blick web site ( best price). You can also get it at Amazon. Please order early because this item tends to run out of stock frequently. If you cannot find the Field book, a substitution would be the Strathmore Watercolor Visual Journal 140 lb paper in a 9 x 12” size

-Arches #140 Cold Press paper- minimum 1 sheet 22” x 30” ( it will be divided into smaller pieces for paintings). Arches blocks are ok if you already have 1. The paper is not quite as nice as the sheets, but it is fine. You may fold this sheet in half when you bring it to class. This makes for easier transport.

 

PALETTE- I recommend the Mijello Fusion Airtight/Leakproof palette. It’s easy to transport to and from class and is reasonably priced.- or use whatever palette you already have.

 

BRUSHES- Synthetic blend brushes are high quality and more reasonably priced than 100% natural hair brushes such as sable or squirrel. I recommend the Silver Black Velvet brush line Series 3000S ( blend of  natural squirrel hair and synthetic fibers)- Round sizes  #4, #6, and #12.  Also the SBV 1/2” flat brush is nice to have, but not necessary.  If you already have brushes, use what you have. Brushes are a big investment, but if you take care of them, they will last a long time. A liner or script brush is nice for very thin lines. I recommend the Robert Simmons Series  S51, #1.

 

WATERCOLORS- Please buy artist quality tube watercolor paints. We will use a limited palette, 1 warm and 1 cool of each of the primaries plus a few other convenience colors.  My favorite brands are Winsor Newton (do not buy Cotman), Holbein and Daniel Smith. Here are the colors I suggest:

 

For cool red- Quinacridone Rose *Daniel Smith

 

For warm red- Pyroll Scarlet *Daniel Smith

 

For cool yellow-  Hansa Yellow Light

 

For warm yellow- Hansa Yellow Deep

 

For cool blue-Winsor Blue (Red Shade)

 

For warm blue-French Ultramarine Blue*Winsor Newton

 

Additional color-

 

Burnt Sienna *Winsor Newton

Payne’s Gray-*Winsor Newton

 

*Indicates the preferred brand, however feel free to use what you already have.

 

Watercolors come in 5ml or 15ml tubes. I use the 15ml tubes but feel free to buy the smaller tubes if you want to be more economical or if you’re uncertain you’ll stick with watercolor.

 

MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS-

 

-Roll of masking tape (avoid the colored tape like blue or green tape-it’s very distracting) I use the Scotch Contractor Grade masking tape #2020. It doesn’t tear the paper when being removed and it prevents paint from sneaking underneath. (I buy on Amazon)

-Water containers- – I use 2, 1 for rinsing the brush and one for applying clean water to the paper. The Falmouth Art Center has plenty of water containers for your use if you don’t want to bring your own

-Tissues or paper towels

– an old toothbrush if you have one

-Pencil and eraser

-Black Sharpie marker- fine or ultra fine

-Ruler

-Board to tape paper to- Gatorboard, Masonite, or plexiglass, about 11 x 15 or larger

-an old towel or household sponge to wipe your brush on

– a small spray bottle or mister ( Holbein makes 1 specifically for watercolor use that is about $3)

– a small sketchbook
