This fun and unique workshop provides a hands-on journey through Ancient Ceramic Time — applying
insights from Art History and Experimental Archaeology to explore a variety of handbuilding skills from
the earliest days of ceramic art and pottery. Using prehistoric-style tools, techniques and materials, you
may choose to replicate the ancient pieces illustrated in class or you may apply class techniques to your
own personal clay creations. No prior clay experience necessary and members of the WHOI Underwater
Archaeology Program are particularly welcome to attend!

Refund policy:

Refunds will not be given within one month of the start of a workshop. Workshops are not pro-rated. A $25 processing fee is withheld from all refunds.

The Art Center reserves the right to cancel any workshop due to insufficient enrollment, in which case tuition will be fully refunded.

Materials

Workshop fee includes 6-8 lbs of clay, oxide colorants, bisque firing, instructional handouts and use of all
items in the instructor’s “Prehistoric Tool Kit”. If you wish to purchase your own Tool Kit, these will be
available from the instructor for 25.00 onsite. Weather permitting, we will be working outdoors. Please
bring a camp chair, work apron and lunch for a short break.

Instructor Bio

Deborah Vidaver-Cohen received a BA from Brown University in 1977 with a double major in Studio Art
and Art History. In 1980 she earned an MFA in Sculpture from the University of California where she
also worked as a Teaching Assistant for courses in Prehistoric and Ancient Art. Deborah’s own artwork
has been exhibited nationally and internationally and is represented in private collections throughout the
U.S. and Europe. She has taught courses in Sculpture, Drawing, Painting and Art History at the college
level and has taught Ceramics classes at the University of Miami Osher Lifelong Learning Institute and
the Gus Canty Community Center in Falmouth. Deborah also has a PhD in the Social Sciences and was a
tenured faculty member at Florida International University for over 20 years. Since retiring from FIU, she
divides the year between Miami and Woods Hole where her family has been affiliated with the Marine
Biological Laboratory since the 1970s. Deborah is a member of Cape Cod Potters as well as the Ceramic
League of Miami where she studied traditional Peruvian handbuilding techniques with renowned ceramic
artist Polo Ramirez.
