Description
TUESDAYS, May 7th to June 11th
6:00pm to 8:00pm
This is a six week class – All levels Welcome
Bring your sense of intuition and discovery to this six week class to launch creativity and experimentation. Allow natural objects and photo reference to inspire and shape your artwork by applying the elements of art: line, shape, color, and principles of design such as emphasis, repetition, and balance. A variety of techniques and materials will be explored and provide the way to paint, draw, plus experimenting with paper and fiber.
Week 1 – Line and Shape
The first part of the class we build a series of linear rhythms and shapes with pencil, paper, and paint to organize a composition. The second part of the class we practice creating a Japanese Notan. The Japanese Notan is light and dark, harmony and balance in a composition or design. This design is a springboard to additional designs and color ways.
Week 2 – Giving Color a Voice, Natural objects Inspiration Painting
Color theory is reviewed and color mixing is practiced. Warm, cool, and vibrant color palettes are created as we experiment with textures, layering paint, and color fields that interweave softness and intensity into the artwork. Establish a focal point to achieve a balanced composition using natural objects as the inspiration.
Week 3 -Still life, Deconstructing and Reorganizing
If realism is taken out of focus, including all traces of value, basic shapes remain. Organic and
geometric lines, shapes, and colors, are then added back into the still life in more simplified
ways. Cubism is reviewed and artists such as Pablo Picasso, Paul Cezanne, and Georges Braque
are the inspiration to the artwork.
Week 4 – Landscape, Looking Close and Far
Bring a favorite landscape or create an imaginary one. Identify and focus on landform shapes
found in the terrain, recreate a the scene by zooming in or out using line, shape and color.
Choose a color palette, such as cool, warm, or analogous, and use shape and line to complete
the composition.
Week 5 – Collage, Techniques and Textures, combining materials
Bring a few magazines to cut, tear, and glue. Play with different techniques to develop surface
textures giving interest and emphasis to spatial areas.
Week 6 –Wall hanging:
Use thread, felting, fiber, and fabric are a few of the materials to shape the artwork.
