This is a 4 week class.

Tell a Story in the Vertical Format using collage and mixed media!

In this class, we will explore working in the vertical format on a 6” x 24” or 12” x 24” substrate to tell a story. We will use large watercolor or mixed media paper larger than 12” x 18”. Wood panels will be available (provided by instructor) as well. The narrow vertical form allows for ease of hanging as it doesn’t take up too much wall space. This will be a 4-session, once a week class. We will create our own collage papers, then arrange them on a substrate for a nice composition and story. Telling a story in the vertical format invites the viewer into your thoughts and moves the eye around the piece. So come on and tell your story with us.

Refund Policy:

Refunds will not be given within one week of the start of a class and one month before the start of a workshop. Classes are not pro-rated, and there are no makeups for missed classes. A $25 processing fee is withheld from all refunds.

The Art Center reserves the right to cancel any class or workshop due to insufficient enrollment, in which case tuition will be fully refunded.

Materials

Materials List:

Matte medium (8 oz. liquitex or comparable)

Watercolor or mixed media paper larger than 12” x 18”

Acrylic paints, assorted colors to your liking plus black and white

White gesso

Stencils and stamps (optional. We can make our own as well.)

Assorted paint brushes plus one that you are willing to sacrifice for gluing

Drawing materials such as gel pens, inks, color pencils, charcoal pencils, china makers, regular pencils

Ruler and scissors

Small spray bottle

Brayer and small sponge roller

Assortment of found papers: old maps, old book pages, movie tickets, old letters, etc.

White tissue paper (gift bag stuffing kind). A few pages of newspaper.

Instructor Bio

Artist bio

Nancy Duffany is a native Cape Codder from Falmouth/Woods Hole. She is a mostly self-taught artist with notable studies under Laure Paillex and, more recently, Cape Cod artist Odin K. Smith. Nancy is a life-long creator adept in various mediums and currently channels her artistic energy into collage, mixed media and acrylic techniques resulting in a fusion of representational and abstract styles. Her focus revolves around animals and nature subjects.

Nancy is a frequent exhibitor at the Falmouth Art Center and just received an Honorable Mention for her collage piece “Watching” in the Summer Juried show. She received a Blue Ribbon in the 2024 Members Blue Ribbon Show at FAC. She has recently exhibited in the Annual Woods Hole Art Show and has been a co-exhibitor at the FCTV Gallery twice in two years. In the past she has had pieces at the Cape Cod Art Center in Barnstable and the Cultural Center of Cape Cod in Yarmouth where one of her collage pieces was selected to be shown on their elevator door (enlarged) for a one-year period. Nancy created an underwater themed mural for the Falmouth High School after prom party and later it was donated and displayed at the Children’s Museum in Mashpee.
