MATERIALS LIST FOR “PAINTING THE LANDSCAPE IN LAYERS”

I order my materials from either Jerry’s Artarama, Dick Blick, or Cheap Joes. Amazon may have some of these items- shop around! Woodruff’s at Mashpee Commons offers a 10% discount to students at Falmouth Art Center

 

 

-PAPER-2 sheets Arches, Fabriano or Saunders Waterford- #140lb cold press or rough 22” x 30”. You may fold these sheets in half when you bring them to class.

 

 

PALETTE- I have the John Pike palette. It comes with a lid and is very popular with watercolor painters. The Mijello Fusion Airtight/Leakproof palette is another option- or use whatever palette you already have.

 

BRUSHES- Synthetic blend brushes are high quality and reasonably priced. You should have 3 round brushes: #2, #6 and #10 or #12. I like the Silver Brush Black Velvet brushes and the Princeton Neptune brushes. Another option is the Cheap Joes Psuedo Sable brushes. If you already have brushes, use what you have. A #2 or #3 squirrel mop made by DaVinci or Isabey is helpful for big washes. A rigger is useful. I use the Robert Simmons Sapphire series S51, #1. If you would like to add to your brush collection, here are some suggestions: the Scroggy Loose Goose brush from Cheap Joes in a size 3 ( good for painting trees) and the Ron Ranson Hake brush from Cheap Joes in a Medium. ( good for grasses and texture.) These are not necessary but I will demonstrate them so you can see how they are used.

 

WATERCOLORS- Please buy artist quality TRANSPARENT watercolor paints in tubes. ( Do not buy gouache).We will use a limited palette, 1 warm and 1 cool of each of the primaries plus a few other convenience colors.  My favorite brands are Winsor Newton (do not buy Cotman), Holbein and Daniel Smith. Here are the colors I suggest- Where there is a choice, pick one.

 

Cool red- Quinacridone Rose (*Daniel Smith)

 

Warm red- Pyroll Scarlet (*Daniel Smith )

 

Cool yellow- Hansa Yellow Light or Azo yellow

 

Warm yellow-Hansa Yellow Deep, New Gamboge, or Indian yellow

 

Cool blue-Winsor Blue (red shade)-(*Winsor Newton)- or Prussian Blue

 

Warm blue-French Ultramarine Blue(*Winsor Newton)

 

Burnt Sienna (*Winsor Newton)

Raw Sienna- (*Holbein)

Quinacridone Gold (*Daniel Smith)

Cobalt Blue- (*Winsor Newton)

Cerulean Blue

Payne’s Grey-(*Winsor Newton )

 

If you would like to add to your palette, the following colors are suggested but not required-

 

Perylene Green- *Daniel Smith

Carbozole Violet- *Daniel Smith

Lavender- *Holbein

Neutral Tint- *Daniel Smith

 

*=Indicates the preferred brand, however feel free to use what you already have.

 

Watercolors come in 5ml or 15ml tubes. I use the 15ml tubes but feel free to buy the smaller tubes if you want to be more economical or if you’re uncertain you’ll stick with watercolor.

 

MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS-

 

-Artist sponge (synthetic round sponge available on Amazon)

-Tissues or paper towels

– an old toothbrush if you have one

-Pencil and eraser

-a fine line Sharpie or other black marker

-several sheets of tracing paper

-ruler

-an old towel to wipe your brush on

– a small spray bottle or mister- Holbein makes a nice one specifically for watercolor

-a small sketchbook for notes and sketches

– a backing board at least 11” x 15” to adhere paper to. Gator board is good or a piece of Masonite or plexiglass will also work

-landscape photos that you have taken and feel inspired to paint
