Using relief prints as an illustration medium has been popular since the first books illustrated with woodblock prints were mass-produced in the 15th century. This is the simplest way to make an easily reproducible image-basically the same technology as making a rubber stamp. The class projects will be variations on black and white prints approaching this art form from many directions. Possible projects may include a repeat pattern, a greeting card, a bookplate with lettering, a self-portrait or pet portrait, a white line still life, and, as a final project, we’ll create a print using my favorite key-block technique. This can be painted in full color with watercolor.
