Expand your vision and take a bolder approach to painting. This course is for the artist who has covered the basics of color mixing and techniques and who wants to move to a more advanced level in the studio. It is focused on art that is derived from real object sources and is, by definition, representational.
Each class will cover a specific topic such as when to modify your palette, bringing the figure into a painting, and contemporary brush work. Interactive discussion on all topics is encouraged. There will be ample class time for painting with personal follow-up by the instructor with each student.
Each class will start with an exercise and short talk by the instructor. Students will then work on common projects for several weeks. The final two weeks they will work on individual paintings with their choice of subject matter.
Though this class is primarily focused on oil and acrylic painting, water-based painters are welcome.
Class topics and discussion:
Essentials of a strong composition, design and value structure.
Adding translucent colors to your palette and how their use differs from opaques.
The language of edges and how to work them expressively.
The human form in the landscape—the importance of scale and placement.
The darks—it’s important not to lose them as you paint.
Health and safety issues in contemporary painting.
How to loosen up your brush strokes.
Expanding your brush knowledge and creating your own signature.
