Hybrid Online / In Person Pastel Painting: Mark making and textured surfaces with Betsy Payne Cook: Wednesdays (Late Fall)

Materials

Supplies:

Photo references. Some will be available if you do not have your own. A selection of photos that represent a varied value range. Hint, we will only use the photos for preliminary work, after that we will rely on our studies during the painting process.

Sanded pastel paper– Surface needs to take a wet medium. Sennelier la carte does not. I will have papers for sale at cost.

Pastels: Bring a selection of both hard and soft pastels with a range of value ( light to dark) and temperature ( warm to cool) and  some dull or muted colors and some fun intense colors( maybe the ones you rarely use).  Please contact Betsy if you have any questions.

Backing board such as black or white foam core board so you can attach your color studies to a rigid surface

Drawing tools: value scale, sketchpad, B pencils, markers or charcoal, ruler, kneaded eraser. Optional supplies for value sketches: Grey toned sketchpad or paper and black and white Sharpie china wax markers (looks more like a pencil) You can also bring value marker set or black and white charcoal pencils.

Texture tools for those that want to try a highly textured surface: plastic knives and forks, toothbrush, old credit card, anything that can scrape the surface.

Rubbing alcohol and a small spray bottle

Roll of paper towels and newspaper for the table- this can get messy

Hair dryer to speed up the drying process

Acrylic inks or gouache paint. I will have some acrylic inks also.

Brushes: You will need three brushes minimum Artists will have the option to use prepared textured pumice *

1. Small brush for color studies, I like ½” flat brushes
2. *1”-2” for the underpainting- depend on the size of your painting surface, student grade is good.
3. *1 ½”-2” house painter’s brush(es) for the gesso and pumice ground – soft bristle will provide a smoother texture. Rough or old brushes provide fun variations, especially when the bristles are stuck together. I keep mine separate but if you clean it well you can use the same brush for gesso and for pumice

Several yogurt size containers and one larger sized container (approximately 2 cup size- cottage cheese container)

Materials for purchase:

I will have various sanded papers for sale at cost.(payment for these items will be directly to the teacher)

If you choose to make your board the materials fee is based on the size of the board you purchase from Betsy, fees cover the use of gesso, pumice ground and acrylic ink. You will have a choice of gatorboard in rectangles and squares, approximately 8 x 10 to 12 x 18

You may opt to bring your own materials and forego purchasing materials from me. If that is the case, please bring gesso, fine pumice gel or similar pastel ground(do not buy coarse pumice/pastel ground) Selection of acrylic inks or gouache for your underpainting, brushes and containers for mixing.
