this is a 4-week hybrid in-person and online class. Online sessions will be on the Zoom platform. The Art Center will email you the link before the online classes meet.
Please register early as class registration closes 48 hours before the start of first class. Registration must be accompanied by full payment.
Classes will be held via Zoom on days the weather interferes with safe travel.
This pastel painting class will be part of an ongoing series with a focus on exploration of both color and multimedia with pastel painting techniques. We will look at how color can change the impact or mood of the painting, assess color preferences and your pastel palette/box and explore ways to expand choices based on color harmonies. Pastels work wonderfully with other mediums, and in this class you will have the option to incorporate techniques and materials into your pastel paintings. Whether you are looking to create a subtle or bold statement you can stretch your pastels and explore what happens when you combine pastels with a variety of materials from paints to stencils on various painting surfaces. You can work representationally or abstract your work, anything goes!
Instruction includes preliminary planning with composition, notans, value and color studies.
We will use reference photographs and still life objects.
For students in previous sessions, you can continue with your theme for painting in a series for large and small paintings.
This class will also experiment with underpainting techniques, using sanded papers ( mounted or unmounted) or prepared boards such as Ampersand Pastelbord or self prepared boards with pumice ground on gatorboard or birch panel.
