Saturday and Sunday, January 31 & February 1
9:30 am -1:00pm

Ideal for beginners to explore the versatility of painting with pastels, or for artists wanting a refresher. Through demonstrations and exercises/studies you will become familiar with pastel techniques & mark making using hard and soft pastels on various sanded pastel papers. Betsy will also give tips on creating good compositions and using color & value in your paintings.

There will be plenty of individual feedback throughout the workshop.

The Falmouth Art Center is very proud to have a scholarship fund supported by donations from members and friends. It is available for both children and adults who have a great desire to create art. Scholarship Information and Forms

REFUND POLICY:
Refunds will not be given within one week of the start of a class. Classes are not pro-rated, and there are no makeups for missed classes. A $25 processing fee is withheld from all refunds.
The Art Center reserves the right to cancel any class or workshop due to insufficient enrollment, in which case tuition will be fully refunded.

Materials

Materials List:
Sketch pad/papers, soft pencils (4B-8B are good). You could also bring grey toned sketch pad/papers and black and white china markers- this is what I typically use.

Black marker- preferably chisel

Photo references – Betsy will have some available to use in class
Rigid board such as foamcore board or Masonite board for mounting pastel papers.
Masking tape

Scissors
Ruler
1 inch flat inexpensive brush and container the size of a yogurt pot

One small rounded hard bristle brush, or a stencil brush
Apron or old shirt

Pastels:

Betsy will have various pastels for you to use during the workshop.

She will also have some individual pastel sticks for sale.

If you are interested in purchasing pastels prior to the workshop some suggestions are:

Soft pastels- Unison, Great American, Richeson, Sennelier -to name a few as the selection is vast- on line at Dick Blick or Dakota Pastels. Half stick sets are a good option for beginners.
Hard Pastels – NuPastel or Rembrandt pastels –can be found locally and on-line

Do not bring oil pastels, it is a totally different medium

Papers: Betsy will have papers for sale for the workshop

Canson MiTienes pastel paper is good for our exercises and studies. – suggest mid-tone neutral color. My favorite is Moonstone, a warm grey. Can be purchase at Woodruffs or on-line. I will have some for purchase.
Betsy will have individual sheets of sanded pastel papers for sale in the workshop. UArt sanded paper – comes in different grades of tooth/texture similar to sandpaper. 200 is rough, 800 is fine. Sampler packs are available with a variety or you can buy a pad of 400 or 500 for a medium tooth surface. Feel free to bring any other sanded pastel spapers: Pastelmat, Pastel Premier, Colourfix are some of the brands.

Instructor Bio

Betsy Payne Cook PPSCC, CPS paints exclusively with pastels, and is honored to be elected as a Juried Associate Member of the Pastel Society of America and to have achieved signature membership status in the Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod. Betsy is also acknowledged as a Juried Master Artist at the Cape Cod Art Association. Betsy’s paintings depict her impressions of the landscape and its abundance of colors. She paints both en plein air and in her studio; and conveys her love of the outdoors in each painting. Betsy publishes a newsletter and a blog both titled Painting In and Out, sharing her thoughts on her life as an artist.
