Color – Light – Spirit: Studio Sam Feinstein
this event is free and open to the public
Sam Feinstein believed that everyone could and should paint. This film brings alive Sam’s devotion to creativity through archival footage of his provocative teaching, interviews with students he inspired, and images of his own art and life. Sam studied with Hans Hofmann who is considered one of the most important teachers of 20th century modernism. He then began to teach his own private classes and workshops that continued in New York, Philadelphia, Princeton, Toronto and Cape Cod for fifty years. His enormous junk-filled “still lives” challenged students to look for the forces within and between forms, for the dancing energy of life, as well as the deep order within. His urging to begin each class with a “cover the white wild one” is explained and demonstrated by both Sam and his students. Sam’s own radiant, abstract paintings, as well as his teaching, reveal art as a spiritual process, as psychic breathing, life-enhancing for creator and viewer alike.
