Juror: Christine McCarthy
Overall Juror’s Statement:
Jurying an exhibition isn’t about selecting individual art works—it’s about creating a vision/theme/dialogue in many instances, with works that don’t relate. My choices elicit inspiration—whether being inspired by place, moment, object, color, texture, etc.
The arc of the exhibition–from sculpture to textiles to collage, prints and paintings—showcases a wide range of talents and emotions. I am hopeful that the artists will see their own work in a different light and that the viewers will enjoy the impact that these artworks spur.
Awards:
Best in Show
Carolyn Dunford, Karie’s Hydrangeas, oil
Strong technique is evidenced by the depth, light, shadow and texture in this beautiful still-life. Hints of French Impressionism couple with the skilled handling of oil paint keep me going back to this picture over and over again.
Best Narrative
Inge Biekert, Escape in the City, digital art
Pop culture, graffiti, text and digital collage balance this contemporary composition while intermingling bold colors and the need to see more.
Best Texture
Annellen Zalis, Where did you go, Skully Joe?, mixed media
I am probably a bit biased when it comes to Provincetown, but this artist captured some of the important themes within the community, fishing and the elemental nature of the Outer Cape, while building texture through the use of sand, paint and collage.
Most “EnDeering”
Tatiana Riabukhina, I’m New Here/Emigration, acrylic
There is an innocent quality to this piece highlighted by the use of a paper bag. This makes me think of process drawings, sketches and mark making that are the beginnings of something more complex.
Best 3-D
Melissa Hofer, In the Round, clay
I have only taken one pottery class in my life—the mastery of this vessel is elegant and refined. The artist has definitely found their calling with their medium.
Honorable Mentions
Robert Golder, March Brown, acrylic
Patterns and realism play into a successful composition, balanced by foreground/background use.
Karla DeStefano, Halocline, acrylic
Hints of underpainting coupled with solid use of paint create depth and rhythm within this picture plane.
Peter Difranco, Nantucket Woodcut, woodcut
Clever use of block printing within a grid (or blocks) gives the viewer a window into an important tradition.
Andrea Moore, Wrap, printmaking
The artist has achieved immense depth in this cyanotype while achieving very painterly overtones.
Debra Kennedy, Breathtaking, oil
This landscape is highly elemental while capturing the dramatic cloud cover and inviting fields of green.
Anne Tcherepnin, Mother Hen, oil
There is a certain quality of glowing light that washes over the hen and her chicks—nurturing, endearing, sweet, illuminating.
