On Exhibit from September 1 to 30, 2024 in the Sigel Gallery at the Falmouth Art Center
East Falmouth artist Elizabeth Zaitsev is originally from St. Petersburg in Russia. In 1990, Ms. Zaitsev moved to the United States and took classes at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. She also attended the Massachusetts College of Art and Design beginning in 2003.
She began taking ceramics classes and exhibiting her paintings at Falmouth Art Center in 2021.
This is Ms. Zaitsev’s fourth summer at the Falmouth Art Center and she said it feels like a second home to her.
Ms. Zaitsev asked her friend Melissa Roberts Weidman to write this poem to express Ms. Zaitsev’s artist’s statement.
Fourth Summer
By Melissa Roberts Weidman
I like to think
We are all survivors
Fire, Nazis, childhood, death
Every cruelty possible
Softens, steeps in time
Carving character, depth
Revealing dimensions hidden
Beneath the surface.
My art is testimony
Bringing me to this harbor of grace
I now call Home.
Four years on
Rooted in place
Nested in the knowledge
Of how to be my truest self
Living in the questions
Of right name, right self
And all the numbers to come.
