Overall statement:
The quality of art and talent of the participating artists was truly outstanding. There were many deserving pieces not included; I worked to create groupings that spoke to each other, especially focusing on textures, layers and the look of weathered surfaces.
Awards:
Best of Show: Sue Colozzi, A Perch Above, fiber
I love the scale of this piece, and the vibrancy of the bright yellow bird against the dark leaves. The medium of fiber art brings texture and warmth to this beautifully composed scene of summer wildflowers in the garden.
Best Mixed Media: Suzy Marden, Summer Still, acrylic collage
The energy of this mixed media piece is so dynamic. The bold primary colors and active lines draw in the eye. It’s an artwork I could keep coming back to.
Best Floral: Andrea Moore, Wild Flower Meadow, monoprint
There is a liveliness to this botanical print that is so joyful and fresh. The contrast of colors–purple on lime green–and assortment of plant types dance with the language of the botanical species.
Best Pastel: Ann Hitch, Days End, pastel
The artist has created a great depth of field from the branches in the foreground, through the marsh, the treeline, into the dark and dramatic sky. The hints of light reflecting in the water in the marsh and in the sky illuminate the moody landscape.
Best Watercolor: Arlene Weibel, Falmouth Shoppers 2, watercolor
Watercolor can be an unforgiving medium, and here, the artist has captured so much: the architecture, movement of the people, and color of the plants. It’s a well rendered day showing Falmouth’s Main Street.
Honorable Mentions:
Robert Scutt, Split Personality, cedar
The organic lines in this piece create interesting movement and the material choice of wood is so rich and warm.
Betsy Payne Cook, Signs of Summer, pastel
The prettiness of this palette cannot be understated. The pinks and oranges are well-balanced.
Naomi Czupryna, Balance and Belonging, oil over mixed media
This painting’s dreamy quality is evocative and captivating.
Anne Tcherepnin, Tranquil Trio, oil
The horses animate this bucolic landscape and that shot of orange livens it up, like the fire of fall foliage.
Stephanie King, The Heart of Sorrento, pressed seaweed and leaves on hemp paper
By placing a heart-shaped leaf onto a circle of seaweed, the artist speaks to simple joy.
G. Thompson, Fool on the Hill, oil
The artist perfectly captures a moment of quiet contemplation in nature.
