Working abstractly in mosaic is my absolute favorite way to lose myself in the medium. The workshop will begin with exploring the nature of the term ‘abstract’ in abstract art, looking at examples historically. Students will have the choice of interpreting an established artist’s abstract painting, thus creating a copy but in the mosaic medium OR creating their own abstract piece.

I will specifically address design issues, use of materials and how to approach the creation of an abstract mosaic, original or copy. We will be working in the indirect method, either on sticky mesh or adhesive, which allows for changes in the process by not permanently adhering piece by piece. This frees one up to be more willing to explore and experiment and allows the process to be one that evolves.

Texture and varying heights of materials are possible with this method. A variety of materials will be provided and students are welcome to bring along additional materials if they so desire. We will create a mosaic 10” x10” or 9” x12”.

Time will be set aside for a final critique of class projects.  All tools, materials including adhesive, substrate and glass will be provided. Bring a smock.  More details will be sent to students ahead of the workshop.

Feel free to ask any questions you might have about the workshop, cindy@bigbangmosaics.com   I have won numerous awards nationally and internationally for my abstracts and I encourage potential students to view my work at http://www.bigbangmosaics.com/fine-art-mosaics.html
